Coordination of the equipment by the step system

The diagram shows the listening equipment, the viewing equipment and the searchlight mutually connected by the step system. The listening equipment transmitted as discussed the values of chart angle and elevation first to the viewing equipment (see photograph). This comprised two pairs of field glasses (for day and night use respectively) of which the two angles were adjusted by handwheels moving simultaneously a writing stylus on a recorder and transported the chart angle and elevation by means of transmitters to the searchlight. The recorder (see photograph) contained a number of chart angle-elevation curves. The chart angle receiver is located centrally in the recorder and the elevation receiver is positioned vertically above the latter. As the search viewing equipment was correctly adjusted, chart angle and elevation had to be read out on the receivers mounted on the right side of the searchlight.
